Chung King Mansion香港的小聯合國-重慶大廈

ChungKing Mansion
the forest
重慶大廈
Shot on a hot summer day at 35c
Canon 40D with 17-40mm F4L
RAW converted by Bibble 4.10
This is my first digital B/W photo essay from the film day
In the old days, if to result the contrast like these
The only solution is to shot with those Germany made camera and lens like
Hasselblade or Leica, but this is not the end of it
You have to use the enlarger like Leitz it is made-by-Leica in order to achieve the rich tone of B/W as well the contrast
Now a day, you only move the adjustment slider in Photoshop and you have it
Viva digital!
After go digital, I don't have to wet my hand anymore
I begin the dialog with this gentleman to get his permission for photograph
He told me he had live and work in ChungKing Mansion for four decades since first day he came from northern India
He never gone away more than 500 meter from the building
Other than ChungKing, he know nothing about the outside world
He is 80 now and going to spend rest of his life with ChungKing
He asks me why I photograph him and stated he's an Indian
I ask him do you speak Cantonese
Instantly he reply me in Cantonese and said he's born in Hong Kong
I told him we're belonging to Hong Kong
"我們都是香港人"
He's very happy with my answer and offers this pose for me
Canon has a great feature
"Highlight Tone Priority"
I should switch on this function next time while I working under contrasted sun light
to avoid his shoulder being washout
"Get Moving With Hong Kong"
Like those who live and work in ChungKing Mansion
They never give up
